EVANSTON, IL: Food Businesses March 17-30, 2020

As of tonight (March 16, 2020) at 9:00 PM, no Illinois businesses may sell food for ON-SITE consumption. That means that no sit-down eating is allowed in Illinois restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, bakeries, etc. This order from Governor Pritzker extends through March 30, as we all watch and see how the Coronavirus pandemic plays out in Illinois. Businesses are allowed to keep their kitchens going by offering a range of delivery and carry-out options for customers.

UPDATE MARCH 18, 2020 (Wednesday)
It is great to see the City of Evanston’s Economic Development department stay on top of all of the food business changes. Now I won’t have to monitor every Facebook page or Twitter account. Here’s direct links for the latest information. The good news is that most restaurants and cafes are open for business, be it carryout and/or delivery.

TEMPORARY HOURS & OPERATIONS
Many Evanston restaurants, grocery stores, etc. have posted temporary hours and temporary operations.  Below are the businesses that have posted temporary information for customers who want to support our local businesses.

This list includes ONLY Evanston food businesses that have posted current information on a website or social media (Twitter, Facebook, instagram, etc.).  Because many restaurants, etc., are closed on Mondays, there will probably be additions. If your favorite restaurant or grocery store is not on this list, it’s best to check with them directly. Most will still be open I believe, even if for limited hours.

Note that everything is in flux and hours & operations are still subject to change. Best to check directly with each store or restaurant.

CARRYOUT, PICK-UP; WALK-IN, CURBSIDE; DELIVERY ?
Different restaurants & cafes are trying out different methods of making food available.
–Some, such as Bennison’s Bakery, are still offering their standard walk-in, order, & carryout.
–Some, such as Sea Ranch Sushi, don’t want customers in the store at all, so they are providing “curbside” carryout: after you order (phone or on-line), call when you arrive and they will bring your order out to you.
–Many are tweaking their DELIVERY options–mostly ADDING delivery options.
–Most are doing a combination of in-store pick-up, curbside carry-out, and delivery.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: Credit card or cash ?
Note that some businesses are REQUIRING pre-order and pre-payment by credit card. This is no doubt to streamline all transactions and to minimize potential exposure. Other businesses are okay with walk-in orders and cash payments.

I think these are both reasonable responses to a multi-faceted problem:
–minimizing everyone’s potential exposure to COVID 19
–flattening the rate of exposure (so as not to overwhelm healthcare and other systems)
–keeping everyone fed
–keeping businesses and employees and everyone in the food chain economically viable
–minimizing food waste (of existing stocks)

GIFT CARDS & TIPS
Finally, in order to help businesses with their cash flow, customers can purchase gift cards at many restaurants and food businesses. The gift cards can, of course, be redeemed later. I haven’t been able to include updated gift card information so please check with your favorite stores & restaurants.

Extra consciousness for food employees is important in terms of tips. If you can afford a little extra (or a lot extra), it might go a long way in keeping everyone going. Right now, in the U.S., the $$ numbers are not adding up for everyone, including almost everyone in the food chain–from farmers to cooks to servers to composters.
